Winson Tang – What You Should Know About Drug Development

Winson Tang is the Vice President of Clinical Research at Sangamo Biosciences, Inc. and is a highly accomplished medical professional. He is trained in immunology as well as nephrology and has a strong interest in orphan diseases. He has therapeutic expertise in diabetes, oncology, hepatology, virology, immunology, and nephrology. He has worked on drug development for orphan diseases and he has worked in clinical research for many years. Drug research and development is an important part of the medical field. If you are interested in learning more about drug development, there are several facts that you may need to know.

Drug development involves several different steps. The first step involves research and discovery. A new medicine or therapy can ameliorate the patient’s symptoms as well as fewer hospitalizations and a higher quality of life. Scientist and doctors study illnesses and diseases in order to find new ways to treat and cure those maladies.

However, medical research can take years and it can be very expensive. According to PhRMA, “the average cost to research and develop each successful drug is estimated to be $2.6 billion,” but that amount “incorporates the cost of failures – of the thousands and sometimes millions of compounds that may be screened and assessed early in the R&D process, only a few of which will ultimately receive approval.” The research step can be difficult and expensive for pharmaceutical companies.

The second step involves preclinical research. Once scientists discover a potential drug, they must proceed to laboratory testing. During the process, scientists strive to answer some basic questions about the safety of the drug. After scientists determine whether or not the drug is safe, they can move on to clinical trials.

This vital step involves human trials and research. Clinical research helps scientists determine how the drug interacts with the human body and how prevalent the side effects can be. Scientists and researchers put a lot of care and effort into designing a clinical research program. They determine what it is they want to accomplish during each Clinical Research Phase when they start the Investigational New Drug Process.

The fourth step in the drug development process involves sending the data to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for review. An FDA team analyzes the drug or device in order to determine its safety and whether or not it should be approved. The fifth step involves FDA monitoring.

The FDA watches the new drug or device once it is released to the public in order to make sure that it is safe for public use. Winson Tang MD – The Future of Gene Therapy

Winson Tang MD is a scientist and physician who is involved in the research and development of important new medical drugs and treatments. One of the biggest treatments that he has been researching is gene therapy. This is the process of replacing or repairing mutant or defective genes with healthy ones to treat disease. This process is still very new and experimental, and is mainly used to treat ‘orphan’ diseases, or diseases with under 200,000 patients that are under-researched. With the development of gene therapy, doctors expect to be able to treat and possibly a huge variety of diseases within the next few decades.

Currently, there are several medical trials that have shown the effectiveness of gene therapy for certain diseases. For example, SCID, which is a genetic disease that affects the body’s ability to fight off infection, can be treated very effectively through years of genetic therapy in which new genes containing the necessary chemicals to combat infections are inserted into the body every few months. Over time, patients show improvement and are able to live a much more normal lifestyle.

Gene therapy is being considered to target some of the world’s most deadly diseases, such as cancer. Scientists such as Winson Tang MD are involved in trials of new gene therapy methods to combat these diseases. There are also now clinical trials in many different cities for gene therapy for SCID, implying that a mass-market gene therapy treatment could be on the horizon. For those with currently uncurable genetic diseases, gene therapy promises to be one of the most important medical innovations of all time.

Winson Tang MD – Innovations in Gene Therapy

Winson Tang MD is a physician and scientist who specializes in the research and development of new medical drugs and other therapeutic treatments. One of his big focuses is gene therapy, which is the process of repairing or replacing damaged or defective genes with new ones in order to correct various medical conditions. This process is still in its infancy, but is on its way to becoming a viable treatment option for a huge variety of conditions. The method is still somewhat risky, because its consistency cannot be guaranteed, and in the United States it is currently being tested as a treatment for diseases that have none or limited treatment options.

There are many different ways to use gene therapy to correct medical problems. A completely new gene may be put into the body to combat a disease. In the case of a mutated gene, a new healthy gene may be placed into the body to replace it, or another neutral or combative gene may be placed in the body to inactivate or ‘turn off’ the existing gene. The biggest challenges with gene therapy is finding a gene that will effectively cause a positive change in the body for the patient’s health problem, and ensuring that the new gene makes it into the target cell.

Currently, the most common method for transporting new genes to their intended location is through a virus that is engineered to safely deposit the new genetic material into the cells of the body. The most common types of viruses for this purpose are adeno associated viruses and retroviruses. Genes can also be inserted into the body physically through an IV or IM injection, or through liposomes, which are small, fatty molecules that are engineered to encapsulate the appropriate genes.

The first successful gene therapy trial occurred in 1990 to treat ADA deficiency, a condition that causes the patient’s immune system to be unable to fight off infections. By repeatedly inserting healthy genes that were able to fight off infections into the patient’s white blood cells over the course of two years, the patient was able to slowly recover and live a more normal life. Just a few years later, scientists began to use this method to treat babies with ADA deficiency to prevent damage from infections later in life.

Other conditions that have been treated with gene therapy include chronic granulomatous disease, which is similar to ADA and leaves the patient unable to fight off infection, as well as hemophilia, a condition that leaves the patient unable to produce blood clots, which means that any bleeding they suffer could be fatal.

Gene therapy is also being researched extensively as a potential cure for cancer, as well as neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease. Scientists like Winson Tang MD are at the forefront of developing treatment for these serious medical conditions.

Winson Tang MD – Time Management Tips For Doctors

Winson Tang MD understands that the medical profession is one of the most challenging around, in part, because it places enormous demands on the time of those who work in it. This means that good time management is essential if you are going to provide the level of care that patients require while also putting yourself in the best possible position to achieve career success. These organizational tips will help anybody who is struggling with their workloads.

Be On Time

The simplest and most important tip is to be on time for all of your appointments. Make sure that you arrive to work early, so that you give yourself the chance to prepare for the day, and work to ensure all appointments fit a schedule. While there is always the chance that appointments will overrun during the course of the day, by making the effort to be as punctual as possible you will get more work done.

Dealing With Messages

You need to consider how you are going to deal with non-urgent emails and messages while working. The easiest way to handle this sort of admin work is to schedule some time when you know you won’t be seeing patients to offer responses, where required. Constantly stopping and starting with these messages during the day may lead to you losing focus on your patients.

Be Concise

While Winson Tang MD notes it is important you don’t appear rude when interacting with others, by being as concise as possible you stand a higher chance of getting the information you need quickly, allowing you to act upon it.
